Our Energy Lifeline from the Stars: Brian Mengwasser

Brian is passionate about innovation and technology. He strives to generate improvements by finding a niche between the technical and business angles of enterprise. Brian trained in innovative methods at Dartmouth College, where he obtained engineering degrees in sustainable design and engineering management. He came to Luxembourg in 2011 to pursue innovation in the space industry. Brian was recently honoured by the Society of Satellite Professionals International as ‘a young professional with talent and motivation to advance into a leadership position in the satellite industry’. The sun is the best and most natural truly sustainable energy source. Wind and photovoltaics, can generate power from the energy the sun radiates to earth. But there’s a problem: much of the energy gets blocked by the atmosphere, AND we only get energy from the sun during the day. Looking up into the stars, Brian discusses the possibilities of space-based solar power as our one true energy lifeline for the future. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
